Darwin 2009 commemorations

The year 2009 is the 150th anniversary of the publication of On the Origin of Species (24 November 1859) and the 200th anniversary of Darwin's birth (12 February 1809). This page aims to list the associated worldwide events and publications.

Submissions for this list should be emailed to Dr John van Wyhe jmv21@cam.ac.uk in the form: 'day month year title'. Sponsor/venue. Link.'

Items are loosely grouped into 'Events', 'Publications' and 'Films and documentaries'. Although this list is currently very far from comprehensive, it is probably the largest list of worldwide Darwin events in 2009.

Shouldn’t we invest now in our biodiversity in order to secure our future needs?   Join leading names from science and politics including James Lovelock (author of Revenge of Gaia), Michael Meacher MP (former Minister of State for the Environment) and Sir Crispin Tickell (Director of the Policy Foresight Programme, James Martin Institute, Oxford University) as they debate the need to put a price on the Earth’s ecosystem services.

13 March - 24 April 2009 Darwin & the Golden Age of Zoology" exhibit: As part of the University of Wisconsin-Parkside's Darwin 1809-1859-2009 commemoration of the 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin's birth and the 150th anniversary of the publication of the Origin of Species, the Library presents "Darwin and the Golden Age of Zoology". The exhibit consists of books, illustrations, specimens, and artifacts related to the many scientific surveys and expeditions of the late eighteenth to early twentieth centuries, of which Darwin's voyage on HMS Beagle is among the best known, and perhaps the most momentous. Included are British or American editions of most of Darwin's books, sumptuously illustrated systematic and zoogeographic monographs from the period, and more recently collected zoological and geological specimens. Highlights include a first American edition of Darwin's Life and Letters (1887), P.H. Gosse's Birds of Jamaica (1847), and a copy of J.E. Gray's Synopsis of the Crocodilia (1867) perhaps once owned by Darwin, and bearing what may be his signature. The materials exhibited are from the Library, the Department of Biological Sciences, and the personal collections of Frank Egerton, Gregory Mayer, and Sean Murphy.

The country's leading experts in the palaeolithic are planning to conduct the first major excavations in Kents Cavern since the 1920s. They hope the information recovered from new fieldwork will contribute to widely-debated issues in palaeoanthropology. Most notably, they will concentrate on the origins of the cave’s use as a human shelter, and they hope to establish firmer dates for the first occupation of the cave by Neanderthals and early members of our own species. 'On BBC Four two documentaries have been commissioned. What Darwin didn’t know explores a new field of genetics, ‘evo devo’ - the combined study of evolution and development in the womb - which is allowing us to solve some of Darwin’s unanswered questions. Darwin: In His Own Words will use newly released documents from Cambridge University to chart Darwin’s thoughts during the long period before he made his theory known to the public.'

'BBC Radio 3 is presenting a series of programmes which explore the roots of Darwin's ideas and their subsequent influence across the intellectual spectrum, in the science, arts and philosophy. In The Origins of the Origins, historian Andrew Cunningham investigates how Darwin's thinking was a product of the scientific ideas of his time. And in Darwin’s Conundrum, the Reverend Angela Tilby looks at how Darwin wrestled with religion through his letters to scientists, clergy, friends and family.'
